Abstract

Hookworm is a parasitic disease caused by Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale and it is a soil transmitted helminths. A study was carried out to assess the prevalence of Hookworm amongst pupils at primary school Muchalla, Mubi North local Government Area, Adamawa state. Direct smear method for faecal examination was performed and stool specimens were processed following a formal-ether standing operation procedure. The parasites were identified on the basis of morphological characteristics. The data obtained in this study was statistically analysed using descriptive statistics and the result were presented as percentage prevalence. A total of 120 pupils were examined comprising of males 65(54.17.0%) and females 55(45.83%). Out of the 120 pupils examined, 26(21.67%) were infected with hookworm. The males are more infected 17(65.38%) than the female 9(34.62%), the age group 8-11 shows the highest prevalence of infection 12(46.15%) than age group 4-7 10(38.46) and age group 12-15 4(15.38). It was therefore, concluded that hookworm infection in Muchalla primary school was prevalent. The researcher recommends that, government should encourage the programme of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) to control and prevent the infection.
